Interlok Arrests: Najib Should Walk the Talk

A protester was pushed down, his face rubbed against the road, kicked and then arrested.

I am not writing about what happened in Libya. This scene took place in Kuala Lumpur, a couple of minutes away from KLCC, Malaysia’s symbol of growth and prosperity.

Ahead of time, the police had locked-down Kuala Lumpur to prevent members of Human Rights Party  and supporters from gathering to stage a protest, calling for the ban of Interlok.

Friends who were on location around the KLCC said that the police verbally abused the protesters including media workers.

Indians sighted around the Shangri-La Hotel and KLCC area were stopped, interrogated and even had their identity cards scrutinized.

Journalists were asked to show their media passes and shouted at for filming the violent arrests.

A few days back Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak slammed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for unleashing violence on his people who were opposed to his rule.

“We believe he should not use violence. What is important for us is to take into account the aspirations of people…The system should be legitimate, it has to be based on support of people” –

These are Najib’s words.

His deputy, Muhyiddin Yassin, called on Gaddafi to allow the people to demonstrate peacefully.

Therefore, what happened on the streets of Kuala Lumpur today clearly shows that the UMNO-led Barisan Nasional government practices double standards.

Interlok contains racial slurs against the Indians.

It is a slap on the face of Malaysian Indians and clearly a play of racial politics, crafted to please the ultra-Malays.

It’s me or chaos – this the mantra of Gaddafi. Toe the government line or face abuse is the slogan of Barisan Nasional and particularly UMNO leaders.

And if Ghaddafi says that the Al-Qaeda instigated his people to take to the streets, UMNO says that issues raised against Interlok were carved out by the opposition.

This is a joke.

In Northern Africa and the Middle-East, we are seeing an uprising as people stand up to re-claim their rights.

Here, Malaysian Indians are fighting to retain their dignity against a piece of literature which is derogatory. And if UMNO cares about democracy, the leaders would allow for legitimate dissent instead of trying to keep a lid on it.

As I write this, the whereabouts of the 109 protestors who have been arrested are unknown.

This further caricatures the abuse of power by the police force. And bins Najib’s 1Malaysia policy which zeroes in on national integration through racial unity.

Opposition politicians and non-governmental organizations have repeated calls for the setting-up of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).

The recent high-handed behaviour of the police at peaceful protests signals the crucial need for an independent body to act as a check and balance on the force.

I, therefore, call on the government to immediately set-up the IPCMC and release all those detained at the protest.

இவர் சொல்வது வேடிக்கையாக இருக்கிறது என சார்ல்ஸ் சந்தியாகோ சாடினார். மலேசியா ஜனநாயக நாடு. நமக்கு பேசும் சுதந்திரம் உள்ளது. அப்படி இருந்தும் ஹிண்ட்ராப்பை பேரணி நடத்தக் கூடாது என சொல்லும் அரசாங்கத்தை பார்த்தல் அவர்கள் நமது அடிப்படை உரிமையில் ஒன்றான போசும் உரிமையை பறிக்கின்றனர் என அவர் மேலும் விவரித்தார்.

அவர்கள் நடத்தும்  பேரணிக்கு போலிஸ் பாதுகாப்பாக இருக்க கூறி அனுமதி கேட்டால் அதை நிராகரித்து  இஃது சட்ட விரோத பேரணி என்றும் இப்பேரணியை நடத்தினால்  சட்ட விரோத நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப் படும் எனும் அச்சுறுத்தல் சிறிதளவும்  ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள முடியாத ஒன்று.

சர்ச்சைக்குரிய இண்டர்லோக் நாவலுக்கு எதிராக நடத்தப்படும் பேரணியை எதிர்ப்பது ஒட்டு மொத்த இந்தியர்களையும்  அவர்களது உரிமைகளையும் அரசாங்கம் சேர்த்து பறிக்கின்றனர் என காட்டுகிறது . இது எங்கள் உரிமை. இப்பேரணி மலேசிய இந்திய சமுதாயத்தின் குரல். அதை நடத்த விடாமல் தடுக்கும் அரசாங்கத்தின் முயற்சி கண்டிக்கத்தது.

இண்டர்லோக் நாவல் விவகாரத்தில் அமைதி சாதிப்பதும் இந்தியர்களின் உணர்ச்சிகளையும் இந்தியர்களயும் அரசாங்கம் பொருட்படுத்தாலும் மதிக்காமலும்  இருப்பது வெந்த புண்ணில் வேல் பாச்சுவதுப் போல்  இந்தியர்களின் மனதை மேலும் மேலும் புண்படுத்துகிறது அரசாங்கம்.

ஆகவே,  இந்தியர்களின் கோபத்துக்கு முற்று புள்ளி வைக்கும் வகையில் பேரணி நடத்த அனுமதியும் பாதுகாப்பும் வழங்குவது மட்டுமில்லாமல் இண்டர்லோக்   நாவலை மீட்டுக் கொள்ளும் படி அரசாங்கத்தை கேட்டுக் கொள்வாதாக கூறினார் சார்ல்ஸ் சந்தியாகோ.

Charles Santiago : Address Indian Marginalization; Persecuting Hindraf is Not the Solution

PRESS STATEMENT

I strongly denounce the recent arrests of 10 Malaysians who attempted to submit a letter to the Prime Minister’s department in Putrajaya. The officials also refused to accept the letter that demanded freedom for the Hindraf five and other ISA detainees, who are held indefinitely without trial.

 

This move would further alienate the Indian community which has been largely disengaged from the development of the country. The grouses harbored by the minority community were reflected in their decision to support and vote for the opposition at the March 8 general election.

 

It is also high time the ruling UMNO-led government allows for further democratic space for people to air their dissatisfaction instead of nabbing those who turn up to submit memorandums or hold protests.

 

Civil societies and rights organizations are calling for the repeal of the Internal Security Act, an archaic relic, used primarily to curb dissent and thwart any form of opposition to UMNO and government. Furthermore, holding people indefinitely without trial violates democracy.

 

Hindraf has been in the eye of a political storm since organizing a mammoth rally where thousands of Indians turned up to publicly show their frustrations at the ruling government.

 

Hindraf’s rallying cry, Makal Sakthi, has become a political brand used by all Malaysians in the struggle against poverty, injustice and abuse of power.

 

It is therefore clear that the ruling National Front coalition issued a ban on the organization as it feels threatened by its capacity to mobilize Indians, who were perceived as compliant. 

 

The government must come up with durable solutions to the many woes faced by the Indians and poor Malaysians. Branding Hindraf an extremist organization is clearly a wrong strategy.

 

Malaysia has recently come under worldwide condemnation for its gross human rights violations, arbitrary arrests, corrupt politicians, domesticated media and tarnished judiciary.

 

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi could make a difference before he leaves office next March. He could start by releasing all ISA prisoners as the country gears up to celebrate Deepavali.

查尔斯：正视印裔边缘化问题：迫害兴权会非解决方案

我强烈谴责政府逮捕十位前往布特拉再也首相署提呈信件的大马人。首相署官员拒绝接收要求释放兴权会五人和其他内安法令扣留者的信。

 

一直以来被排斥在国家发展之外的印度社群，将因此举进一步被疏离。这些少数社群的不满已反映在反对党获得辉煌胜利的三月八日全国大选。

 

巫统领导的政府亟需开放更大的民主空间，让人民公开表达他们的不满，而非逮捕那些提呈备忘录或举办抗议集会的人。

 

公民社会和人权组织已多次促请政府废除内安法令此一前朝恶法。其主要用来压制异议和铲除所有反对巫统和政府的力量。不至于此，以无审讯方式无限期剥夺人民的自由违反民主精神。

 

在去年11月举办一场大型集会，数万印裔参与并公开表达他们对政府的愤怒之后，兴权会就成了政治风暴的台风眼。

 

兴权会集会喊出的口号，马卡沙蒂（Makal Sakthi, 人民力量）已经变成所有大马人反对贫穷、不正义和滥权的政治品牌。

 

显然的，执政的国阵宣布兴权会为非法组织，乃因它深以兴权会动员印裔的能力为惧，印裔一向来被视为顺从者。

 

政府必须为印裔面对的困境和贫穷阶级提出永久性的解决方案。把兴权会标签为极端组织是个完全错误的策略。

 

最近，大马侵犯人权、任意逮捕、贪污的政治人物、驯服媒体和玷污司法形象的不良记录被世界各国广泛批评。

 

首相阿都拉可以在明年三月离任前做出改变。他可在国内热烈庆祝屠妖节之际释放所有内安法令扣留犯。

DAP parliamentarian Charles Santiago today called on political leaders to stop whining about Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders and supporters being present at the premier’s Hari Raya open house last week. MCPX The opposition politician also found it amusing that Abdullah Ahmad Badawi – who holds the top job in the country – is disappointed that a group of people approached him to request for the release of the Internal Security Act (ISA) detainees during the open house. “But when the prime minister laments that Hindraf supporters failed to shake hands and extend Hari Raya greetings to him and his cabinet colleagues, he sounds downright pathetic. “Abdullah needs to understand that the action of Hindraf activists is part of the democratic process. He must also be educated that the chanting of slogans by Hindraf supporters is all about the freedom of expression, which is in short supply in Malaysia,” he said in a statement today. Santiago also took a swipe at MIC president S Samy Vellu who expressed concerned that the activists had undermined his efforts to secure the release of the ISA-detained Hindraf leaders. “Instead of being an apologist for Abdullah and his government, Samy Vellu should gather enough courage to demand for the repeal of the ISA which allows for indefinite detention without trial, following the examples of MCA, Gerakan and the PPP,” he said.‘Not an Indian issue’ Human Resources Minister and MIC secretary-general deputy minister Dr S Subramaniam had also irked the Klang MP by saying that the presence of Hindraf members at the open house went against Indian culture. “This is an absolutely ridiculous assertion, more so as it comes from a smart man like Subramaniam. Since when does fighting for basic rights and liberties violate any culture?” he asked. Santiago then turned his attention to independent MP Ibrahim Ali, who had threatened to protest over the Hindraf visit. “Maybe he does not realise that resorting to the ancient tactic of racial politics has no place in Malaysia anymore. “I urge Ibrahim to stop seeing the detention of Hindraf leaders as an Indian issue but a Malaysian one and request Muslim groups not to regard the attendance of Hindraf members at the open house as a sign of disrespect to Muslims,” he said. “Let’s not start twisting the real issues and fashion them to instigate racial problems in the country. The ISA is way off its expiry date and redundant in a modern democracy. “But the ruling government uses it as an easy tool to create a climate of fear and head off threats to its leadership,” he added.

திறந்த இல்ல உபசரிப்பில், ஒரு குழுவினர் தம்மை அணுகி, உள்நாட்டுப் பாதுகாப்புச் சட்டத்தின்கீழ் காவலில் வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளவர்களை விடுவிக்குமாறு வேண்டிக்கொண்டது ஏமாற்றமளிப்பதாக நாட்டின் உயர்பதவி வகிக்கும் அப்துல்லா அகமட் படாவி கூறியது  வேடிக்கையாக இருக்கிறது என்றும் சந்தியாகு குறிப்பிட்டார்.

“இண்ட்ராப் ஆதரவாளர்கள் தம்முடனும் தம் அமைச்சர்களுடனும் கைகுலுக்கவில்லை, வாழ்த்து கூறவில்லை என்று பிரதமர் கூறியதைக் கேட்கப் பரிதாபமாக இருந்தது.

“இண்ட்ராபினரின் செயல் ஜனநாயகத்தின்பாற்பட்டதுதான். மலேசியாவில் எதற்குத் தட்டுப்பாடு நிலவுகிறதோ, அந்தப் பேச்சுரிமை வேண்டும் என்றுதான் இண்ட்ராப்பினர் சுலோகங்களை முழக்கினர் என்பதை அப்துல்லா புரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும்”. இன்று வெளியிட்ட அறிக்கை ஒன்றில் சந்தியாகு இவ்வாறு குறிப்பிட்டிருந்தார்.

இண்ட்ராப் ஆதரவாளர்களின் செயல், இசா கைதிகளாக உள்ள இண்ட்ராப் தலைவர்களை விடுவிக்கும் முயற்சியைக் குலைத்துவிட்டதாகக் கவலை தெரிவித்த மஇகா தலைவர் ச. சாமிவேலுவையும் சந்தியாகு சாடினார்.

சாமிவேலு, அப்துல்லாவுக்காகவும் அரசாங்கத்துக்காகவும் பரிந்து பேசுவதை விடுத்து மசீச வையும் கெராக்கானையும் போல் விசாரணையின்றி காவலில் வைக்க வகைசெய்யும் இசா சட்டத்தை அகற்றுவதற்கு துணிச்சலாகக் குரல் கொடுக்க வேண்டும் என்றாரவர்.

திறந்த இல்ல உபசரிப்பில் இண்ட்ராப் ஆதரவாளர்களின் நடத்தை இந்தியப் பண்பாட்டுக்கு ஏற்புடையதல்ல என்று கூறிய  மனிதவள அமைச்சரும் மஇகா தலைமைச் செயலாளருமான டாக்டர் எஸ். சுப்ரமணியமும் அந்த கிள்ளான் நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினரிடமிருந்து ‘வாங்கிக் கட்டிக்கொண்டார்’.

“ஒரு புத்திசாலியான சுப்ரமணியம் இப்படிப் பேசக்கூடாது. அடிப்படை உரிமைக்கும் விடுதலைக்குமான போராட்டம், பண்பாட்டை மீறும் செயலாக எப்போது மாறியது?”.

திறந்த இல்ல உபசரிப்பில் இண்ட்ராப்பினர்  கலந்து கொண்டதற்கு எதிர்ப்புத் தெரிவிக்கப்போவதாகக் கூறியுள்ள சுயேச்சை நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் இப்ராகிம் அலியையும் சந்தியாகு விட்டு வைக்கவில்லை.

“பழங்கால இனவாத அரசியலுக்கு மலேசியாவில் இடமில்லை என்பதை அவர் உணர வேண்டும்.

“இண்ட்ராப் தலைவர்கள் தடுத்து வைக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதை ஒரு இந்தியர் விவகாரமாக பார்ப்பதை அவர் நிறுத்திக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். அதை ஒரு மலேசிய விவகாரமாகக் கருத வேண்டும். திறந்த இல்ல உபசரிப்பில் அவர்கள் கலந்துகொண்டதை முஸ்லிம்களை அவமதிக்கும் செயலாகக் கருதக்கூடாது என்றும் அவர் முஸ்லிம் தரப்புகளைக் கேட்டுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்”, என்றாரவர்.

“உண்மையான விவகாரங்களைத் திரித்துக்கூறி இனப் பிரச்னைகளைத் தூண்டிவிடக்கூடாது. நவீன சமுதாயத்துக்குத் தேவையில்லாதது இந்த இசா.

“ஆனால் அரசாங்கம் அச்சத்தை உண்டுபண்ணவும் எதிர்ப்புகளை அடக்கவும் அதை ஒரு கருவியாகப் பயன்படுத்திக்கொள்கிறது”, என்று சந்தியாகு கூறினார்.

兴权会支持者在首相的开斋节开放门户宴会要求阿都拉释放内安法令扣留者，作为国家最高领袖的阿都拉说他对这种做法感到失望，这是非常可笑的。

首相对兴权会支持者没有向他和其他内阁成员握手和说“开斋节快乐”感到难过。

阿都拉必须了解，兴权会支持者的行动是一个民主过程。阿都拉必须接受民主的洗礼，兴权会支持者呼喊口号是行使表达自由的权利，但那恰恰是马来西亚所一直缺乏的。

当阿都拉说“吵闹的侵入者”破坏了佳节气氛，前工程部长三美维鲁却担心这些活跃份子的举动会破坏他争取释放兴权会领袖的工作。

与其成为阿都拉和其政府的忠诚跟随者，三美维鲁应该有足够的勇气要求废除允许无限期无审讯扣留的内安法令。马华公会、民政党和人民进步党已经作了很好的示范。

人力资源部长和国大党秘书长苏巴马廉指责兴权会的做法违反印度人的文化。这是非常滑稽的言论，特别是由精明的苏巴马廉的口中说出。争取基本权利和自由，何曾违反任何文化？

这个政治戏剧还没落幕，伊布拉欣阿里还威胁要抗议。或许他还不明白斥诸种族政治的旧策略已不被大马人接受。

我呼吁伊布拉欣视兴权会领袖被扣留为大马人而非印度人的议题，也勿把兴权会支持这出席开放门户宴会视为不尊重回教徒。

不负责任的政治人物总是歪曲真正的问题，使其以种族问题的面貌出现。内安法令在当今的民主潮流中已经“过期”和多余，但是执政联盟却以之为制造恐惧氛围的利器，除掉影响其政权的所有威胁。

我再次呼吁所有大马人，在庆祝开斋节和迎来屠妖节和圣诞节的当儿，团结要求国阵政府废除严酷的内安法令。

阿都拉必须首先释放在恶名昭彰的《内安法令》下被扣留的兴都权利行动力量（Hindraf）的五名领袖，他们自去年12月起就被误审讯扣留至今。只要他们没有获释，阿都拉将正视该会18点诉求的保证，仅仅不过是为补选演出的一出戏。

国阵在三月全国大选的耻辱性溃败，绝大部分要归咎于阿都拉和国阵许多错误和粗糙的决策。尽管面临政治挫折，特别是国阵和巫统内部的愤怒情绪，阿都拉还是继续发出令人觉得可悲的言论。

首相吁求印裔投票给阿力夏，理由是印裔需要他的照顾，这种荒谬的说法令人难以忍受。照顾少数社群和所有族群的贫困人士，保障这些弱势群体的福利，本来就是国家的责任。

马来西亚人习惯根据政党的种族色彩投票，马来人投巫统，华人投马华，印度人支持国大党。这种安排之所以能够运作，因为不同的族群相信只有属于该族群的政党能够照顾他们的权益。但是当人们，包括少数族群对他们的政治领袖存有的期望破灭，这个制度安排已经难以维持下去。

因此，取消金属交易执照禁令是不足以赢取印裔选票的。政府必须拟出中短期的计划，制订一系列可实行的目标和限期，提升印裔社群的社会经济状况。反之，印裔将再次遗弃执政联盟，重演3月8日全国大选的反风。
