By DHARMENDER SINGH
KLANG: Klang MP Charles Santiago lodged a report at the district police station here over the unruly behaviour by about 15 youths outside the Sri Muniandy Temple in Port Klang on Saturday night.

Santiago, who arrived at the police station at about 11am on Monday to lodge the report, said he had gone to the Sri Muniandy temple at about 10.50pm on Saturday as he had been invited to attend its 25th anniversary function.

He said he leaving the temple just after midnight when the youths, mostly in their early and mid 20s, suddenly surrounded him and started to shout at him in Tamil claiming he was responsible for overthrowing MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

“One of youths with me was taking photographs at the time and they shouted that they would kill him for doing so,” he told reporters after making his report.

Santiago said his assistant Sarah Devaraj, who was also present, was shoved by one of the youths and people from the temple plus party members had to intervene to escort them safely into their car.

He said the ordeal did not end once they got into the car as some of the youths started to jump on the car boot and also kick the front of the vehicle.

“They were in the front and back of the car so we could not drive out as we might end up running into them,” he said, adding that after getting into the car he also noticed that the car’s side mirror had been shattered.

Again the people from the temple and party members had to intervene to create enough space for the car to drive out of the narrow road, he said.

He said he had noticed the group of youths present outside the temple as he arrived earlier but did not know any of them.

He said the reaction from the group might have also have been in retaliation to the anti-crime campaign he was working on with the police, Klang Municipal Council, Non-Governmental Organisations, residents associations and rukun tetangga (neighbourhood watch) outfits.

Klang OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Mat Yusop confirmed that a report had been lodged and said police had recorded statements from Santiago and his assistant.

He said police would investigate the complaint and try to identify the youths who were involved.
